Description amadeus.bit 2008-10-08 13:38:26 UTC
Yesterday I closed pidgin, because one programm caused 100% load on X (it was skype), but after restarting pidgin, I got varios error messages from my accounts, that the servers counlnd be resolved. With kopete and pidgin@windows everything works fine.
I tried to delete the .purple folder, reinstalled pidgin atfirst with 2.4.3 then 2.5.1. nothing changed. I tried diffrent use flags like bonjour and debug. At last I located every file related to pidgin and deleted it (locate -i pidgin purple | xargs rm -r) and reinstalled pidgin. I also reinstalled dependencies cike glib, dbus, python, gtk+,... Nothing changed.
Perhaps it has something to do with the new gcc 4.3.2 I installed 3 dayes ago. I made an emerge -e world to compile everything with it, but after it, pidgin still worked.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. dunno
2.
3.

Actual Results:
Installed gcc-4.3.2
emerge -e world

Expected Results:
Should connect flawless
Comment 1 amadeus.bit 2008-10-08 13:40:58 UTC
I forgot, I downgraded gtk+ to 2.12.12, because mplayerplugin didnt compiles with 2.12.14. but after it pidgin still worked

Some output from pidgin itself would be helpful (whatever it prints when started from a command line, logs and so on).

see attachment

perhaps this is important too. git has the sameproblem. When I try to update my overlays, layman cant update the git ones

layman -S

and if I try to reinstall openrc-9999 from git

emerge -1 operrc

in other words, you have a general name resolution problem, nothing to do with Pidgin:
- at least change the subject of this bug
- de-assign the bug from net-im
- this bug looks to me like a general system configuration problem, and, should be debated in forum, , because i bet there is no bug inheren to Gentoo.

Amadeus: make a compleet update of your system, with EXACTLY those commands:

emerge --sync && emerge -DaNuv world && revdep-rebuild && revdep-rebuild && etc-update

and eventually:
fix_libtool_files.sh -h
python-updater
perl-cleaner
java-config

Then fix your machine by reading ewarns (using elogv or elogviewer).

If *any* of the above command fail, then the bug has nothing to do with Pidgin => go to forums or IRC.
Comment 6 Peter Volkov (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-12-17 12:24:22 UTC
Since git fails too this problem has nothing to do with pidgin. To debug check that resolving for normal users works (e.g. with ping www.gentoo.org)? Also may be this is permissions problem on /etc/resolv.conf? Anyway closing as invalid: try to localize this problem more and if you sure that only pidgin fails, then reopen.
