Comment 1 Jakob Schiotz 2008-10-06 19:40:50 UTC
I am not use it is the same bug, but from version 2.0.0.17 firefox is exceedingly unstable. It crashes as soon as I access my University´s internal web pages - or a lot of other web pages using javascript. It seems to be a javascript thing, turning it off solves the crashes (but leaves our intranet useless).

I see the bug if I use the mozilla-firefox-bin package, which installs a 32 bit firefox on my x86_64 machine. Compiling firefox myself with the mozilla-firefox package appears to solve the problem, but then I loose flash as that does not exist in a 64-bit version.

Many other seem to have the same problem, although for them using the binary version instead of the compiled version appears to help (i.e. the opposite of what helps me): http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-5239349.html

I think a bad mistake was introduced upstream in 2.0.0.17 making it unstable. Perhaps the 2.0.0.16 ebuild could be returned into the tree (hardmasked, of course, since I assume that it was a security update). Then those who feel they know what they do, and find it more important to access known web pages than being protected from evil site they wouldn't approach anyway can revert.

I have the same problem with javascript running 2.0.0.17; Re-emerge doesn't help. Version 3.x works fine.

Debug assertion captured from the console:
Assertion failure: top != 0, at jsopcode.c:854

Installed versions:  2.0.0.17(16:10:13 11/02/08)(debug gnome ipv6 java ...)

The problems I was experiencing (comment #1) are apparently gone in mozilla-firefox-bin-2.0.0.18
