Description Torsten Eriksson 2008-09-25 11:11:59 UTC
After upgrading ssmtp, two problems occurred:

1. The user did not have permission to use /usr/sbin/ssmtp (through /usr/sbin/sendmail).
2. When permissions were set manually (chmod o+rx) the executable reported that it could not connect to mailhub on port 25.

The log entry said:
Sep 25 12:09:22 servername sSMTP[6522]: /etc/ssmtp/ssmtp.conf not found
Sep 25 12:09:22 servername sSMTP[6522]: Unable to locate mailhub
Sep 25 12:09:22 servername sSMTP[6522]: Cannot open mailhub:25

So - ssmtp can not find its own configuration file. This file is in place and correct as far as I know.

Reproducible: Always

This seemed like a configuration error or a bug. The problem was resolved by downgrading to ssmtp 2.61-r2.

Please post your `emerge --info' and the output of `ls -l /etc/ssmtp' too.
Comment 2 Tobias Scherbaum (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-09-26 15:28:46 UTC
 * Starting with =mail-mta/ssmtp-2.62 all users who should be able
 * to send mails using ssmtp must be added to the ssmtp group.
 *
 * See bug #187841 for reference.

Well, that sounds like it will be really impractical. However, after adding myself to the ssmtp group it is still not possible to send email using ssmtp:

send-mail: 501 Bad address syntax
Can't send mail: sendmail process failed with error code 1

So, regardless, I'll supply some info here. (Interestingly, this bug report can't be found by searching for "ssmtp")

ls -l /etc/ssmtp
total 8
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 200 Sep 26 21:36 revaliases
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1223 Sep 25 12:30 ssmtp.conf

ls -l /usr/sbin/ssmtp
-rwxr-x--- 1 root ssmtp 31264 Sep 26 21:36 /usr/sbin/ssmtp

emerge --info
