Description Billy DeVincentis 2008-09-20 16:16:49 UTC
I have been using himerge for its superb package branch editor which unfortunately with the 30 versions appears to have broken. In starting himerge from a terminal, here is what happens when trying to save changes to package.mask or package .unmask

billydv@Linux1 ~ $ himerge
hima: /tmp/himerge_tmpfile12064: rename: unsupported operation (Invalid cross-device link)

hima: /tmp/himerge_tmpfile12063: rename: unsupported operation (Invalid cross-device link)

hima: /tmp/himerge_tmpfile12065: rename: unsupported operation (Invalid cross-device link)

hima: /tmp/himerge_tmpfile12066: rename: unsupported operation (Invalid cross-device link)

hima: /tmp/himerge_tmpfile12068: rename: unsupported operation (Invalid cross-device link)

hima: /tmp/himerge_tmpfile12069: rename: unsupported operation (Invalid cross-device link)

hima: /tmp/himerge_tmpfile12070: rename: unsupported operation (Invalid cross-device link)

hima: /tmp/himerge_tmpfile12067: rename: unsupported operation (Invalid cross-device link)

billydv@Linux1 ~ $

Although himerge allows you to make the changes without reporting any errors, the changes are not made to the actual files. I have tried starting himerge both as billydv and as root, didn't make a difference. I also tried easing permissions on the files, that didn't help either.

Reproducible: Always

Hello Billy,

I can't reproduce this bug .. though, let's see and try to get more information about it.

How are you masking/unmasking the package?, tell me the exact steps.

And, how are you installing Himerge?, manually from the darc repo, or using the ebuild?

What are the file permissions for /usr/bin/hima?, check out that this is a suid program.

Also, remember you now need to be member of the 'himerge' group to get these privileged operations working.
Comment 2 Billy DeVincentis 2008-09-22 04:34:56 UTC
Okay Luis, first I start himerge from a terminal, all masking and unmasking done thru himerge. If I wish to mask a package, I will right click on the listing in himerge and choose a mask or unmask action, each time I do so I get this in terminal

hima: /tmp/himerge_tmpfile17121: rename: unsupported operation (Invalid cross-device link)

and the package.mask file is not edited.
Both myself and root are members of the himerge group and /usr/bin/hima is set uid in permissions. I have also changed permissions on the package.mask and package.unmask but that made no difference.

I think I know what the problem might be but I have no idea what to do about it. I use several partitions for my gentoo install. / is on one partition, /var on another, /tmp on another, /usr/portage on another, and /home on another. As I was googling "Invalid cross-device link", I read that there were limitations to symlinks when using multiple partitions.
Comment 4 Billy DeVincentis 2008-09-22 05:12:30 UTC
Okay, I have confirmed that this is indeed the problem Luis. When I unmount my separate /tmp partition and allow /tmp to reside on the same partition as / it works okay. I know I'm not the only one that uses multiple partitions and prior to the 30 series, it worked okay. Is there something you can do about this?
Comment 5 Luis Araujo (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-09-22 19:44:53 UTC
Hello Billy,

I released a couple of new versions today.

I think this bug is now fixed in the latest one 0.30.22.1 , please give it a try and report back.

Thanks,

Thanks!!
Comment 7 Luis Araujo (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-09-23 09:17:46 UTC
Hello Billy, Thank you, I wasn't sure at all and I kind of guessed what the problem in the code was, I am glad it worked.

Thanks for reporting this bug,

Regards,
