After emerge --sync, emerge -Dpuv asks to downgrade. The removal of this version looks like an error from my perspective (it has a patch added to the prior version), but what do I know?
http://sources.gentoo.org/viewcvs.py/gentoo-x86/app-arch/rpm2targz/rpm2targz-9.0-r7.ebuild?hideattic=0&rev=1.10&view=log "old/broken" is what the commit message says.
That's what it says alright, but it was the stable version from Jun 2008 and after the removal the latest stable version is 9.0-r6 from Sep 2007. Mostly this looks like an error because there is no corresponding mention in the package ChangeLog, just a minor change to rpm2targz-9.0.0.3g.

I generally don't doubt other devs but Comment #2 is indeed a compelling argument.
meant to punt -r6, not -r7
