Description David Radice 2008-09-11 13:06:39 UTC
notification-daemon-xfce fails to update icon cache while installing, so no icon is displayed in the menu/settings manager even after a reboot. It was necessary to manually update the icon cache with:

sudo gtk-update-icon-cache -f -t /usr/share/icons/hicolor

The elog confirms that no icon cache updates was done by the ebuild despite the pkg_postinst function which calls "gnome2_icon_cache_update".

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.emerge notification-daemon-xfce
2.login/reboot
3.check the menu or settings manager

Actual Results:
No icon is displayed

Expected Results:
The notification-daemon icon shuold be displayed

There is no reason this wouldn't be done, as the icon cache updating was fixed on 27th June for bug 229333.
Maybe it wasn't your first install and it unmerged something that did have an update of icon cache missing? Otherwise something wonky is going on at your place, which needs more data to debug, such as a build log.

notification-daemon-xfce build log (with extra debugging output)

Here is the build log. To reproduce this bug and obtain the attached log I did exactly this:

$ emerge -C notification-daemon-xfce
$ gtk-update-icon-cache -f -t /usr/share/icons/hicolor
$ FEATURES="keeptemp keepwork" emerge -d notification-daemon-xfce

Icon cache was not updated and I had to do it manually...

When I hit this bug for the first time I did an:

$ emerge -C notification-daemon
$ emerge notification-daemon-xfce

Ah perfect -- a build log with debugging turned on. Looks to me as though there is a missing call to gnome2_icon_savelist in pkg_preinst, so $GNOME2_ECLASS_ICONS is empty when gnome2_icon_cache_update gets called.

Assigning to maintainers now that there is sufficient info to work with.

thanks, fixed
