Description Jon Phillips 2008-09-10 17:08:08 UTC
nsplugin wrapper can be used to install Macromedia flash into a 64-bit ebuild of firefox. This is mentioned in http://gentoo-wiki.com/Adobe_Flash/AMD64 and works for me, but is not mentioned in this documentation page.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Load the page http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-amd64-faq.xml
2. Read it.
Actual Results:
I read
"Yes. To get Flash working, you need a 32bit browser like mozilla-firefox-bin or opera because Macromedia doesn't provide a 64bit version. After emerging the -bin package of your favorite browser, install Flash by doing emerge netscape-flash."

Expected Results:
It should have told me about both possibilities (or more if there are any).

The package swfdec-mozilla[1] seems to be another possibility (it is marked as testing in amd64).

@amd64: ¿are all these options known to work? Thanks.

Well, we don't recommend ~arch packages in our docs, but since there is a stable version of nspluginwrapper, I can mention it in that FAQ.

Fixed in CVS.

I can confirm that nspluginwrapper works with Flash and 64-bit browsers; I've been using it for years now. swfdec-mozilla isn't really an option, since 1) it's ~arch, and 2) it's nowhere near as feature-complete as the actual Flash binary. Users would be losing functionality.
