I did an emerge acroread, expecting to see an upgrade from version 5.06(-r3) to 5.07. The emerge went well enough, but it turns out that version installed was an even older one than the one replaced (I went from 5.06(-r3) to 5.05). Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3.
please provide #emerge info #emerge -p acroread
Hhhmmm ... this seems to be some sort of screw-up on Adobes part. I tried manually downloading the file linux-507.tar.gz. It's clearly the same file that's used by the emerge (via a norwegian mirror). The resulting acroreader presents itself as "x86 linux 5.0.5 Apr 25 2002 11:55:26". So either Adobe posted the wrong file (albeit with the right name), or they forgot to update embedded version info in the executable. As Acroread 5.0.8 was released recently and it displays the version correctly (and Adobe distributes 5.0.7 as it is), I think we can leave this problem as WONTFIX.
