Description Mamoru KOMACHI (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-06-29 05:11:49 UTC
Server Name: sb.itc.u-tokyo.ac.jp
Server IP: 133.11.205.121
Mirror Admin: Mamoru KOMACHI
Mirror Admin E-mail: <usata@sodan.ecc.u-tokyo.ac.jp>

I would like to provide a new gentoo rsync and source mirror
located on Hongo, Tokyo, Japan. This server will serve as
a mirror at least until next April, but I'm not sure after
that (I'll let you know as soon as I know whether it will
be able to continue or not).

A rsync mirror is available at rsync://sb.itc.u-tokyo.ac.jp/
and a source mirror at ftp://sb.itc.u-tokyo.ac.jp/GENTOO/
(no http available).

Sorry for the delay. Can you confirm the CPU, RAM & bandwidth available
to the server? For the rsync server, will the minimum user connection
limit be at least 15?

Thanks.

Hi, it is Sun Blade 1000 server, which has 900MHz UltraSPARC III CPU
and 4GB RAM, and its bandwidth may up to 400 Mbit. I set the user
connection limit to 300, is that OK for you?
Comment 3 Peter Penkala gentoo-dev 2003-07-29 15:08:17 UTC
300 is fine. Because of Gentoo's grwoth, we like to see at least 15.

I've added 133.11.205.121 to the access list for rsync1.us.gentoo.org.
Please update your rsync cron jobs to point to rsync1.us.gentoo.org
and post back here when you've done so. We'll monitor the server
for a couple days to make sure things are working fine.

Thanks.
Comment 4 Mamoru KOMACHI (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-07-31 07:21:54 UTC
Hi. I updated rsync cron job to point rsync1.us.gentoo.org.
Please check it. btw, is there anything else that I should do
for setting up source distfiles mirror? Currently distfiles
mirror ftp://sb.itc.u-tokyo.ac.jp/GENTOO rsyncs with
www.ibiblio.org. Should I change it to rsync1.us.gentoo.org as well?

Thanks in advance.

Monitoring the server now. Source mirrors don't sync with rsycn1. I'm not
certain of the details, so I'll see if I can get someone to send you the info.

The server appears to have stopped syncing. The last sync was at
Thu, 31 Jul 2003 18:33:00 +0000 (date -uR format). Can you see if
there are any problems?
Comment 7 Mamoru KOMACHI (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-08-01 14:20:51 UTC
Is there? It seems it syncs with rsync1.us.gentoo.org server
every 30 minutes (and I use sb.itc.u-tokyo.ac.jp as my rsync
server and it looks it updates on regular basis).

rico% date
Sat Aug 2 05:53:36 JST 2003
rico% ls -l /usr/portage/metadata
total 15
drwxr-xr-x 85 root root 2360 Jul 31 22:12 cache
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 29 Aug 2 05:12 timestamp
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 32 Aug 2 05:30 timestamp.chk
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 40 Aug 2 05:30 timestamp.x

If it is a matter of sync timing, probably it is solved by adjusting
cron job to

1,31 * * * * /usr/local/bin/rsync -rlptDvz --delete rsync1.us.gentoo.org::gentoo
-portage /work/mirror/rsync1.us.gentoo.org

(increase cron timing by 1 minute)

but I'm not sure whether I should change it or not.

According to the logs on rsync1.us.gentoo.org you've been syncing fine all day. I'll let Peter continue his monitoring from a user's viewpoint.

You need to leave the syncs at 0 and 30 in your cron, and run ntpd against a nearby time server so that your clock is close as possible to rsync1.us This is so all of the servers update at the same time and avoids any drift.

Thanks & Cheers!
Comment 9 Peter Penkala gentoo-dev 2003-08-08 06:57:12 UTC
Whatever was happening earlier seems to have cleared up. This server is
now rsync4.jp.gentoo.org. Please update the motd file to include that
information.

I've subscribed <usata@gentoo.org> to our gentoo-mirrors mailing list (low volume). This list is used to discuss mirror-related issues.

Thanks for supporting Gentoo.
Comment 10 Mamoru KOMACHI (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-08-18 02:41:03 UTC
Thanks for everyone helping it become a rsync mirror. btw, does anyone know
who should I ask for to get ftp://sb.itc.u-tokyo.ac.jp/GENTOO as a gentoo
official source mirror? It syncs with ftp.ussg.indiana.edu every 4 hours.
Because mirrorselect uses http://www.gentoo.org/main/en/mirrors.xml,
I think ftp://sb.itc.u-tokyo.ac.jp/GENTOO needs to be nominated there.
Comment 11 Peter Penkala gentoo-dev 2003-08-18 15:43:19 UTC
Source mirrors are handled seperately from rsync mirrors. Go ahead and
create a new bug for the source mirror.

Currently, we're behind on getting source mirrors added, but hopefully we'll
be catching up soon.
