In a 2.6.22 kernel, I can't seem to load the modules necessary to run vmware server.Pasted below is a link to the forum that lead me to report what might be a bug. http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?p=5204113#5204113 Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.On a 2.6.22 kernel, emerge vmware server and then run the config script. Actual Results: * Starting VMware services: [ ok ] * Virtual machine monitor [ !! ] * Virtual ethernet [ !! ] * Module vmnet is not loaded. Please verify that it is loaded before [ !! ] * running this script. [ !! ] Expected Results: The modules should have loaded and I should be able to use vmware.
Please post your emerge --info. Thanks.

Attaching kernel .config is also good in cases where modules are involved. By the way, what version of vmware-modules got installed? And do missing symbol errors show up in 'dmesg' after trying to load vmmon or vmnet modules manually?
Hiya Jon, Wormo's right, could you please paste which version of the vmware-modules you're using, and ensure that they've been recompiled recently. It's this package that contains the kernel modules, and it's this that needs rebuilding. The error you reported on the forum page was of the modules not being found. We need to figure out if that's because they haven't been rebuilt for this kernel, or if it's because they're being put in the wrong place. If vmware-modules has been recompiled, please attach the output of the emerge. Thanks... 5:)
So I'm getting this message when I try to recompile the modules, which I think is the problem here. I'm a little hesitant to run those make commands because I don't want to break my new kernel which took me ages to finally get (mostly) right. What does this mean and what should I do? * These sources have not yet been prepared. * We cannot build against an unprepared tree. * To resolve this, please type the following: * * # cd /usr/src/linux * # make oldconfig * # make modules_prepare * * Then please try merging this module again. * * ERROR: app-emulation/vmware-modules-1.0.0.15-r1 failed. * Call stack: * ebuild.sh, line 49: Called pkg_setup * ebuild.sh, line 1244: Called vmware-mod_pkg_setup * vmware-mod.eclass, line 36: Called linux-mod_pkg_setup * linux-mod.eclass, line 471: Called check_kernel_built * linux-info.eclass, line 385: Called die * The specific snippet of code: * die "Kernel sources need compiling first" * The die message: * Kernel sources need compiling first * * If you need support, post the topmost build error, and the call stack if relevant. * A complete build log is located at '/var/tmp/portage/app-emulation/vmware-modules-1.0.0.15-r1/temp/build.log'. * The ebuild environment file is located at '/var/tmp/portage/app-emulation/vmware-modules-1.0.0.15-r1/temp/die.env'. *
Created attachment 164958 [details] my config file for the kernel in question 2.6.22-r10
Well, it suggests the kernel in /usr/src/linux hasn't been compiled yet. If you think the new kernel has been compiled, then it suggests that the modules are being built against a different kernel. It would be useful if you could please attach the full output of the vmware-modules failed compilation. Please check that your new kernel has been symlinked to /usr/src/linux and that it's been compiled at least once (the instructions the ebuild gives you carry out the bare minimum compilation needed to be able to build against the kernel). A full recompile should then remove that error...
Oh man. I just figured out why at least I was getting the error about the modules. I had the symlink flag set in my make.conf and it updated my symlink to a non-existant kernel at some point without me realizing it. After compiling the modules and reconfiguring vmware, it appears the modules loaded properly. Sorry to waste your time.
No problem, glad you got it all fixed. 5:)
