So sorry, forgot to mention that quickcheck-1.1.0.0 is indeed installed.
Comment 3 Jeroen Roovers (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-09-02 17:22:34 UTC
Please post your `emerge --info' too. Thanks for the build log, btw - it seems that it ought to find a regex/-compat too (but the 1.0.9 ebuild doesn't depend on dev-haskell/regex-compat):

checking for module Text.Regex( mkRegex, matchRegex, Regex )... no; and neither in package text

Which version of dev-lang/ghc is installed? (emerge -vp dev-lang/ghc)
Comment 4 Nelson 2008-09-02 18:57:46 UTC
I have ghc-6.6.1.

Could you please confirm that quickcheck is not just installed but also working?
Load it into ghci and type "quickCheck True", which is similar to what the configure of darcs does.

Thank you. Indeed Quickcheck wasn't working well. So I reemerged it and started a little odissey:

 * The package dev-haskell/cabal is not correctly installed for
 * the currently active version of ghc (6.6.1). Please
 * run ghc-updater or re-emerge dev-haskell/cabal.

Which is strange because I had just emerged everything haskell related for the first time.

So I reemerge Cabal and was able to reemerge Quickcheck, yet it still fails to be found in ghci.

So I tried ghc-updater which reemerged a lot of stuff (and in the middle failed to emerge some but didn't stop).

In the end dev-haskell/parallel-1.0.0.0 needed to be emerged by hand. Ok, so then it pulled ghc-6.8.2. Forget it, reemerged quickcheck and cabal would work now.

Still, should be considered a bug having to do all this manually when this was my first install of ghc (no update as the error suggests).
Comment 7 Lennart Kolmodin (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-09-03 17:14:46 UTC
This is odd if you never have had ghc installed before. Darcs was package 7 of 7 during the installation, what where the other packages? You can check your logfile /var/log/emerge.log

ghc-updater is used to recompile already installed packages when you upgrade your installed ghc version.
If it found something it means you have had a previous version of ghc installed.
ghc-updater failed with a package, you say, and we should be able to see the remains of it.

Run
$ echo /usr/lib/ghc-*

and it should list the ghc 6.6.1 that you have installed, and possibly also list another version of ghc if there still are some leftovers (failed packages) from upgrading.

What you're experiencing is common if you upgrade ghc without running ghc-updater. Portage thinks that the packages are installed, and indeed it is, but to a version of ghc which has been unmerged. We are unable to express the dependency of an installed haskell package to a specific installed version of ghc. To aid there is ghc-updater to find what has to be done.

Ok sorry, I didn't knew of this file, it explains everything. I emerged himerge and it pulled ghc-6.8. Some minutes later my computer does "emerge --sync", and before I know it when I emerge dacs minutes later it pulled ghc-6.6.1.

I didn't realize there had been a sync, so didn't think ghc had been {down/up}dated :/ Still ghc-6.8 has always been stable, something linked to dacs must be pulling an old ghc no?

The package that failed was parallel.
Comment 9 Nelson 2008-09-03 19:06:27 UTC
Oh, and "quickCheck True" is still not in scope. Thanks for the support so far!

Ok, then we know what happened, good.
And yes. The last stable version of darcs, darcs-1.0.9, will pull ghc 6.6.1.
I recommend you try darcs-2.0.2 instead, which is masked at the moment, but has worked really well.
Either way you should really be using ghc 6.8.2 (or later) because 6.6.1 is quite old and does not have the new things 6.8.x brings, which you'd want if you're going to write applications yourself.

Right, parallel needs >=ghc-6.8.

So if I emerge himerge, I can only emerge an unstable darcs despite having a stable version. I have no problem doing that, but for instance builds in Catalyst (stage4) or other automatic builds have a problem here.

This can be solved by slotting ghc I suppose. Any objections on doing this? I could try.

Humm, actually maybe not. The ebuild would have to change active ghc before compiling. For instance Darcs would emerge ghc-6.6.1, select it as active, build, and restore default ghc version, not sure if portage allows this with, for example, gcc.

We have a patch in the haskell overlay fix the compilation of darcs-1.0.9 with ghc-6.8. I could look at moving it into portage.

You probably really want darcs-2.0.2 anyway, lots of new stuff under the hood.
I'll ask to stabilize it as soon as the 30 days has passed, and people will be able to use the latest ghc.

Slotting ghc is a big project, and would result in much trouble for the users. If you have a haskell package installed with portage, to which ghc instances does it belong? Portage could not tell the difference. People would run into the same trouble you just had.

Instead we should focus our efforts into making everything work with the latest released ghc version.

I'm closing this bug, as the issue is resolved.
