Description Raul E Rangel 2008-08-25 23:30:07 UTC
I updated to expat-2.0.1 from a 1.x version, and now when doing
$ revdep-rebuild -X --library libexpat.so.0
or emerging any other packages that require expact it still try's linking against libexpat.so.0 instead of the newly created libexpat.so.1

i.e) When trying to emerge x11-libs/pango-1.20.5
I get an error: /var/tmp/portage/x11-libs/pango-1.20.5/work/pango-1.20.5/pango/.libs/lt-pango-querymodules: error while loading shared libraries: libexpat.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Upgrade from expat 1.x to 2.x
2. revdep-rebuild -X --library libexpat.so.0

Actual Results:
Writing a pango.modules file to use with tests/examples.
/var/tmp/portage/x11-libs/pango-1.20.5/work/pango-1.20.5/pango/.libs/lt-pango-querymodules: error while loading shared libraries: libexpat.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
make[3]: *** [pango.modules] Error 127

Expected Results:
pango to compile normally

This happens with any ebuild that linkis to expat

Wow, you have a _lot_ of outdated packages!

Please try `emerge --sync; emerge -vuaDN world; emerge gentoolkit; revdep-rebuild;'. Reopen this bug report if the problem persists. :)

That's what i was in the middle of doing, but I got stuck because of this error. The way i got pango and the other libs to start compiling was to
$ emerge libXft
It apparently did something to fix it. Now 20hrs of compiling left, thanks!

I had the same problem today, trying to update a gentoo box with lots of outdated packages.

I was receiveng the message

"...error while loading shared libraries: libexpat.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory"

revdep-rebuild listed tens of brokens apps that relied on libexpat.so.0

I a

ls -l /usr/lib/libexpat.so*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root     17 Oct 12 10:22 /usr/lib/libexpat.so -> libexpat.so.1.5.2
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root     17 Oct 12 10:22 /usr/lib/libexpat.so.1 -> libexpat.so.1.5.2
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 127172 Oct 12 10:22 /usr/lib/libexpat.so.1.5.2

So I hadn't a libexpat.so.0 link. It was fixed with

ln -s /usr/lib/libexpat.so.1.5.2 /usr/lib/libexpat.so.0

I what a think that happened is that during the emerge world some upgrade deleted the simlink and crashed before rewriting it or just deleted and never rewrote it back.

Had same issue, above workaround worked for me. The package that was failing on my system was
sys-apps/kbd-1.13-r1
