Without cairo-quartz-font.pc installed to /usr/lib/pkgconfig,
applications like gnumeric display characters as mere rectangles
on OSX aqua environment.

This was reported in MacPorts and then upstream cairo ML:

Since the upstream has already fixed it in developing source,
a quick hack for ebuild suffices; a patch follows.

Committed. From my reading it look like 1.6.6 will be released in the next week or so.
