When you Emerge app-emulation/virtualbox , what you get is the OpenSource Edition. Which is lacking many noteable features. When you install app-emulation/virtualbox-bin , you're not getting the same version but in binary. What you getting is a different product. The app-emulation/virtualbox-bin is the PUEL Licensed version. It contains a lot of features that I'm sure most users would want. My suggested action then is Rename the ebuilds to reflect these differences. Such that app-emulation/virtualbox-ose (is the open source edition) and app-emulation/virtualbox-puel is the binary closed source version. Reproducible: Always
Personally, I think the naming is adequate however a change to the description of -bin might be in order. -puel, while accurate, doesn't mean anything to most users. Maybe -ose and -bin if anything.
virtualbox -> virtualbox-ose might be an option, -puel is a no-go (far from intuitive)
(In reply to comment #2) > virtualbox -> virtualbox-ose might be an option, -puel is a no-go (far from > intuitive) > I think that this naming convention better reflects the contents of: http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Editions. In addition seems to be adopted by other distributions. Alessio
Well ok then, just modify stuff in my overlay, I'll do package moves and whatever is necessary then, just leave a note here
k', package moves done we now have virtualbox-bin virtualbox-ose
