Description Martin Stockinger 2008-08-20 08:53:42 UTC
I use 'eix-sync -q' in a cron job. Even though I use the Option '-q' there is some
non error output.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Run: eix-sync -q

2. Look at the output
Actual Results:
q: Updating ebuild cache ...
q: Finished 24930 entries in 9.648274 seconds
real 243.92
user 21.07
sys 10.22

Expected Results:
<no output, only if there is an error>

Comment 1 Martin Väth 2008-08-20 12:05:27 UTC
What you see is output of standard error not of standard output, so eix-sync -q is working correctly (i.e. as documented).

The POSIX "time -p" command always outputs the time on stderr. This is indeed
questionable, and I will change this in next eix or make it optional.

However, the other output of standard error is that of q-reinitialize of
app-portage/portage-utils. It may be considered as a bug or feature request
for that package: Informal messages should go to stdout and not to stderr.

I change the summary correspondingly (the bug was assigned to tools-portage
already, anyway).

This is not likely to change in portage-utils as it does exactly what it does for reasons we chose. Redirect stderr if you want NO output.
