The newest gvim version (7.2) does not use the "normal" gtk open file dialog but the very old one even though gvim was build with the "gnome" useflag enabled. (03:35:41 PM) jamessan: HorizonXP: it's not a Gentoo bug. the new Gtk dialogs would cause Vim to excessively write out the "Recently Used files" file (like every time you pressed a key), so Bram switched back to the old dialogs So the only solution is to revert to a pre-7.2 version. Or, wait until it's fixed upstream.
