Did wget suddenly change its parameters? I got a similar error with herdstat. See bug #222887.
Which version of wget are you using? Do you have a /root/.wgetrc file?

But otherwise it works fine. So it looks like the problem is somewhere in hddtemp, but wget-1.11.4 is a bit more tolerant. wget-1.11.4 takes care of the symptoms, but not the cause of the problem...

The cause of the problem is 'timestamping = on' in /etc/wgetrc. As wget's man page explains, this option is incompatible with -O, which is used in hddtemp, update-usbids etc. Perhaps it would be better not to enable timestamping globally and move it to your ~/.wgetrc?
Closing as WONTFIX, since the source of the problem is in a local configuration file.
