Description Leif Brown 2002-05-02 13:11:38 UTC
Trying to install gnome for the first time on the box, "emerge gnome" fails on
package gdm-2.2.5.4 with:

>configure: error: Could not find the gnomeConf.sh file that is generated by
>gnome-libs install
>
>!!! ERROR: The ebuild did not complete successfully
>!!! Function src_compile , Line 44, Exitcode 1
>!!! (no erorr message)

I've successfully merged gconf, but that doesn't seem to have fixed the problem.
(Seemed like the obvious first step, given the error message.)

This also occurs on control-center-1.4.0.5, gnome-core-1.4.0.8

I'm pretty sure this is a bug, since it's on a clean system. (X, fluxbox &
mozilla merged, system updated and rsync'ed.)

Google search indicates the lib comes with the gnome development packages.

Moved severity to critical, since so many apps want gnome, and since it happens
right up front where it'll scare the newbies & block fresh installs.

is gnome-libs installed already?

"emerge --pretend gnome-libs" shows version 1.4.1.6.

But just to be sure, I tried re-merging it, and the merge failed.

and on:
1.4.1.5-r1
1.4.1.5
1.4.1.4-r2
1.4.1.4-r1
1.4.1.4

Looks like the problem may be in gnome-libs...

Leif, can you spam a few lines above where you spammed the last comment? I'd
like to see where exactly in the compilation it failed.. Thanks :)

punting this further to Matt

Leif, I just finished a stage1 install and emerged gnome
(gnome-base/gnome-libs-1.4.1.6). gdm also installed perfectly for me. I didn't
encounter the problem you encountered. Could you post the USE flags you were
using? And also (I know this is a dumb question), but do you have space left on
/var?

My USE flag was "pda". (ah, brevity...) Plus, of course what was inheritted
from the globals & defaults.

My /var partition is 36 Gigs. If I don't have space, we need to talk about the
size of the distro. ;)

Behavior during emerge was also strange, so I spent this weekend hitting my hard
drive with the fdisk stick and installing from stage 1, stage 2 and stage 3, each.

This is *not* a problem with stage 1 install. But on a Stage 3 install, I
suddenly see this and a LOT of the problems currently swamping the installation
forums.

The stage 1 install runs & updates flawlessly.

I'm holding back on this in favor of bug 2486, because frankly, I don't think
this is the bug I thought it was. (Mouth, meet foot. Foot, meet mouth. It's
like I've got Tourrette's but instead of swearing, I file bugs...) Dropping
severity, hanging head in shame...
