Description Chris J Arges 2008-08-15 17:06:38 UTC
I downloaded the eclipse.org eclipse 3.4 ppc version and tried to run it on my machine. For some reason it will not launch and says 'No such file or directory'. This is odd because I can ls it, and file it, and it is clearly there. I can run this on other systems and it works. Also file says it is dynamic and ldd says it isn't, which is very odd.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Download eclipse from here: http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/download.php?file=/eclipse/downloads/drops/R-3.4-200806172000/eclipse-SDK-3.4-linux-gtk-ppc.tar.gz
2. Untar the archive
3. cd into directory and run ./eclipse

Actual Results:
arges@escher ~/downloads $ tar xf eclipse-SDK-3.4-linux-gtk-ppc.tar.gz
arges@escher ~/downloads $ cd eclipse/
arges@escher ~/downloads/eclipse $ ./eclipse
-bash: ./eclipse: No such file or directory
arges@escher ~/downloads/eclipse $ file eclipse
eclipse: ELF 32-bit MSB executable, PowerPC or cisco 4500, version 1 (SYSV), for GNU/Linux 2.2.5, dynamically linked (uses shared libs), not stripped

-rwxr-xr-x 1 arges arges 249 Jun 17 21:42 eclipse.ini

Expected Results:
eclipse launches

Linux escher 2.6.27-rc3 #2 SMP Fri Aug 15 01:58:09 CDT 2008 ppc64 PPC970MP, altivec supported PowerMac11,2 GNU/Linux

This is an Apple G5 machine,
using gentoo 2008.0 with ppc64/64ul

I have tested the tarball on other distros on the same machine (ubuntu livecd) and it works file, also tested with opensuse and it works as well. Both with ppc64 kernels.

Issues with arbitrary third party packages is beyond what we handle. Forwarding to ppc64, i case there this is a platform issue.
Comment 4 Nelson 2008-08-19 02:07:04 UTC
I had a look and those distros seem to be 32ul while you're on 64ul, and eclipse runs on 32ul so should be a userland problem.

I got that output on a x86 box for the eclipse-ppc, seems normal.

Have you got a *32-bit* Java SDK? This is probably your problem.

For instance this user is x86_64 and had this same error while loading the i386 version:

I ment ldd, and 'file eclipse'. And I believe I had the same "no such file" output on x86 when Java wasn't well set up.

this is well beyond gentoo/ppc64 scope...

please report this issue upstream. you should check before if you have java working correctly and if eclipse from eclipse.org is supposted to work with 64bit userland on ppc64.
