Description Tuomas Jäntti 2008-08-14 11:21:08 UTC
During system and world update my cups was updated from 1.2.6 to 1.3.7-r1

Emerge was successful. I have also run etc-update and revdep-rebuild as the postinst message requested.

Cups gets started up on boot as before successfully.

When I try printing I get the error message:

E [14/Aug/2008:13:48:55 +0300] Unable to execute /usr/libexec/cups/filter/rastertoprinter: No such file or directory
E [14/Aug/2008:13:48:55 +0300] [Job 658] Unable to start filter "rastertoprinter" - No such file or directory.

The printer does not print. (Canon BJC-3000)

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Install net-print/cups-1.3.7-r1
2.Try printing anything (The printer test page will do)
3.

Actual Results:
Error messaged.
Printer does not produce output.

Expected Results:
No error message.
Printer prints given job 8)

Others have had similar problems. But I did not find a bug report on the problem.

To fix the problem on my system was quite simple after all:

1. Browse to http://localhost:631/admin
2. Select Administration - Add Printer
3. Install the printer that did not print
4. Select - Printers - Delete Printer
5. Delete the faulty printer installation.

I suggest an information message to the emerge info be added.

You probably also upgraded gimp-print/gutenprint during your world update since older versions shipped the mentioned filter "rastertoprinter". The recent ppd file for your printer now makes use of the "rastertogutenprint.5.1" filter:

$ zcat /usr/share/cups/model/gutenprint/5.1/C/stp-bjc-3000.5.1.ppd.gz | grep cupsFilter
*cupsFilter: "application/vnd.cups-raster 100 rastertogutenprint.5.1"

Gutenprint should normally take care of automatically updating your ppd files nowadays by running /usr/sbin/cups-genppdupdate.5.x in the pkg_postinst() phase of the ebuild.
