There is a bug in stock Xfwm4 that prevents windows from being given focus while using Avant Window Navigator.  This has been patched in Xfwm4 SVN and Ubuntu Hardy's version of 4.4.2.  The patch is attached to the linked Launchpad bug.  I have been using this patch since 4.4.1 with success.
