Description Jerry 2008-07-26 18:56:57 UTC
When I attempt to boot the 2008.0-r1 Live CD using the gentoo kernel (gentoo; gentoo sdb=stroke; gentoo sdb=stroke ide=nodma; or gentoo nodetect) I always get the following results, the boot stops for a long time at the ":: Scanning for ahci..." then it continues and I receive the following error message (with BIOS set for either AHCI or SATA):

>> Looking for cdrom
!! Media not found
>> No bootable medium found. Waiting for new devices...
>> Looking for cdrom
!! Media not found
!! Could not find CD to boot, something else needed!
>> Determining root device...
!! Could not find the root block device in .
Please specify another value or: press Enter for the same, type "shell" for a shell, or "q" to skip...
root block device() ::

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Turn on PC
2.at boot prompt type name of kernal to boot from with options if any
3.

Actual Results:
boot fails, unable to find cdrom

Expected Results:
booted into Gentoo Linux

My Hardware is as follows:
ASUS M3N78-VM Motherboard
Chipset: NVIDIA GeForce 8200 (MCP78S)
LAN: NVIDIA nForce built-in Gigabit MAC with external Realtek 8211CL-GR PHY
Graphics: Integrated NVIDIA GeForce Series DirectX10 graphics processor (supports HDMI, DVI, & D-Sub)
HD Audio: VT1708B HD Audio 8-channel CODEC Supports Optical S/PDIF out ports at back I/O
Processor: AMD Athlon x2 (5000) 2.6 GHz
SATA Port 1: WD Caviar SE16 7200 RPM 500GB HD
SATA Port 2: Seagate Barracuda 7200 RPM 500GB HD
SATA Port 3: LG Super Multi Blue GGW-H20L (BD/ HD-DVD/ DVD/ CD formats compatible)
(motherboard labels for SATA ports start with 1 instead of 0)

According to the following URL, the SATA features of this chipset are not supported by the 2.6.24 kernel, which is what the 2008.0 media uses. It should be supported properly by a newer kernel in the next release.

Please reattempt with the pci=nomsi kernel option. This was successful on GA-M750SLI-DS4. Also, I did not compile msi into the kernel. I am using AHCI and this is not specific to the SATA subsystem.

I can confirm this bug on a brand-new machine with ECS Elitegroup GF8200A motherboard. I can confirm that it happens with either AHCI or SATA setting of BIOS "SATA Mode".

This bug happens with or without pci=nomsi option.

Weird enough, the very first time I turned on this machine, I could boot from Gentoo Live-cd, although it still stayed for some long time at ":: Scanning
for ahci..."

Sorry, but I don't think I will able to test this again. I don't plan rebooting this machine very often. (and right now I'm looking for any x86_64 ISO that comes with newer kernel)

Try this:

http://gentoo.osuosl.org/releases/amd64/autobuilds/20090226/install-amd64-minimal-20090226.iso

Please let us know if it works for you.

you can boot 2008.0 properly by doing this:

gentoo (or gentoo-nofb) pci=nomsi

there is a known issue with the ahci settings on this board.

I am setting up one now. If you can tell me the correct settings for the network and audio though... :-)

aparently the mcp78s/audio driver is still in alsa unstable and thus not in any kernel.

I'm attempting to build it now, but we'll see how that works out for me.

I would like to note that msi is working on my GA-M750SLI-DS4 with 2.6.27 (the current kernel I'm using for x86) and 2.6.28 (the testing kernel I'm using with x86_64). Also, the MCP78s audio is working for the most part with the stable trees, the volume control is erratic at this time, the volume can jump to all or nothing when adjusting the audio and the left and right channels have unlinked sometimes as well.

Maybe you can, but I couldn't. 2008.0 didn't work for me.

The install-amd64-minimal-20090226.iso worked.
System Rescue CD also did work very well:

everything is working for me now on this chipset

the alsa drivers ARE NOT in any stable release kernel, I had to download them from alsa unstable. HD-Nvidia/HD-Intel

btw, my board is an M4N72-E (using the nVidia MCP78s chipset)

Works on newer autobuilds, so marking as FIXED.
