Description Luke-Jr 2008-07-26 08:57:39 UTC
udev holds up the boot process by hanging on the bttv module for a good 2 minutes or so. This might have something to do with the cards apparently being tuner-less (just video-in), but unfortunately I found this system in the trash and don't know much about the cards in it (3x 4 port BTTV-compatible PCI cards).

Comment 5 Wormo (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-07-26 18:53:19 UTC
How often are you going to be using the bttv card? If it usually won't have any video input, why don't you blacklist the driver from being loaded automatically, and manually load bttv when you do need it?
Comment 6 Luke-Jr 2008-07-26 19:08:21 UTC
The sole purpose of getting this machine running is the bttv card. :)
Comment 7 Matthias Schwarzott gentoo-dev 2008-08-12 10:45:53 UTC
Did you already what happens if you blacklist bttv and then do modprobe bttv once the system is up and running?

PS: As your bttv card seems to have no eeprom (with subvendor/subdevice id) the driver cannot know the exact type card you should provide the bttv module the parameter card=...
Comment 8 Luke-Jr 2008-08-12 17:51:19 UTC
modprobe hangs for some time as well.

To date, I have not been able to successfully randomly guess which of the hundreds of card ids might work...

And the system's hard drive decided to fail, so as of right now I'm stuck.

so doing just `modprobe bttv` takes a long time ? sounds like the kernel, not userspace

I think the autodetect is not working. We need to find the card=n parameter to pass to this driver during modprobe.

I've never seen one of these in my life, any way to get the manufacturer at all?

Can you try card=10 and then card=13 and then card=23?
