Description Matthew Schultz 2008-07-25 15:58:14 UTC
The documentation referencing how to unmask a package with a missing keyword is incorrect. I attempted to unmask openrc-9999 with:

sys-apps/openrc ~* *

I can confirm that this does not work. When attempting to unmask with:

sys-apps/openrc **

It allows me to emerge openrc-9999. The correct documentation for this is also mentioned here: http://gentoo-wiki.com/Masked#Masked_by_missing_keyword

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. echo "sys-apps/openrc ~* *" >> /etc/portage/package.keywords
2. emerge openrc

Correct Version:

1. echo "sys-apps/openrc **" >> /etc/portage/package.keywords
2. emerge openrc

Actual Results:
Package still masked

Expected Results:
Package unmasked

Yes, it is incorrect for that package only (and others like it that have KEYWORDS="") Please consult the portage man page for reasons why. However, that syntax is still valid under most circumstances. "You can unmask it by accepting another architecture for the package." (quote from the URL) This is valid, but the package doesn't have any architecture's supported.

We are not responsible for that page. AFAIK, anyone can edit that.

My vote is to leave it as is. I do not think it is the wishes of the AMD64 team to support packages that are untested on all archs (eg. openrc-9999)
Comment 3 nm (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-07-25 18:54:51 UTC
Well, having an empty KEYWORDS variable entirely is a stupid, stupid thing to do. It really should be in the tree with some ~arch masking, even if accompanied by -* for all other arches.

But, even though I only found about three packages with empty KEYWORDS, I'll go ahead and update the guide to reflect **. The Portage manpage concurs with using this in p.keywords to unmask packages with empty KEYWORDS.
Comment 4 nm (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-07-25 18:55:19 UTC
Fixed in CVS.
