When I issue a /etc/init.d/bacula-dir start nothing happens. It doesn't even make it to 'Starting bacula director' bacula-fd & bacula-sd start without any problems.
Which Bacula ebuild do we speak about? Also provide `emerge --info` plase.

Is everything configured? I mean you created the database (using the 3 scripts) and have created a /etc/bacula/bacula-dir.conf for your system?
Yes, I have been using Bacula since 2.2.8 on this server.
Well, I can't explain it but after a power outage in the weekend (which caused a system crash), all is working fine again... Next time I will first try a reboot before filing reports...
