I know that the branding USE flag was removed from the app-office/openoffice ebuild. I also read that there was an issue with black splashscreens when using the default bitmap. The bitmap which is coming with oo is an indexed bmp file. converting the index bmp file to a rgb bmp file fixed the problem for me.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Build app-office/openoffice.
Actual Results:  
No branding USE flag.

Expected Results:  
Convert the default oo splashscreen to a rgb bmp file and reintroduce the branding USE flag for the app-office/openoffice ebuild.

This is fixed with 3.0, not going to bother for 2.4.1
