1. fresh install of livecd-i686-installer-2008.0-r1.iso
2. boot the system 

cupsd doesn't start because libgnutls.so.3 is not installed by the installer

just checking the obvious, but you chose to install cups during the install and it didn't give errors?

No, there are no error messages, I've just checked reinstalling again. 

The problem is that the CD installs net-libs/gnutls-2.2.5 which provides libgnutls.so.26.1.6, and cups is loooking for a more recent version.
