Description Andrés Becerra Sandoval 2008-07-22 15:21:49 UTC
1. Fresh install of livecd-i686-installer-2008.0-r1.iso
2. Reboot

I expected my MBR to be wiped by the installer, and the new grub being copied there. What I got is the old grub in MBR untouched.

I believe that grub stages don't get copied to the disk MBR, however the /boot/grub/* files are correctly created. To solve the problem I copied the gentoo entry in /boot/grub/grub.conf created by the installer into the old grub configuration.

This allowed me to boot the recently installed system.

Thanks,

Do you have more than one drive?
What was the partition layout? GLI installs to the MBR of the drive w/ your /boot.

I have only one drive, with this layout:

% sudo /sbin/fdisk -l /dev/hda

Disk /dev/hda: 81.9 GB, 81964302336 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9964 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0xfd478bc7

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hda1 1 5 40131 83 Linux
/dev/hda2 6 68 506047+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/hda3 69 8579 68364607+ 5 Extended
/dev/hda4 8580 9964 11125012+ 83 Linux
/dev/hda5 69 191 987966 83 Linux
/dev/hda6 192 8579 67376578+ 83 Linux

My old gentoo install is in /dev/hda6, the recently installed gentoo with the live CD is supposed to install in /dev/hda4.

The installer is deprecated.
