I ran an "emerge -uavD world". media-video/mplayer is being upgraded to 1.0-rc2_p27120 but configure hangs: [snip...] Checking for gethostbyname2 ... yes Checking for GUI ... no Checking for iconv program ... I attach an excerpt from pstree -apl, emerge --info etc. Please let me know if anything further is required.

You don't seem to have USE=nls, and it looks like amd64/2008.0 defaults to that, while media-video/mplayer perhaps expects or requires it. The mplayer ebuilds used to have IUSE=nls and now they don't. And default-linux/amd64/ still has USE=nls (in its make.defaults) but default/linux/amd64/ does not.
