Description Jeremy Olexa (darkside) (RETIRED) archtester gentoo-dev Security 2008-07-18 03:03:51 UTC
There is no easy way to get a tarball from upstream (only svn repo exists). I don't feel like making my own tarball to fix this like the previous gentoo maintainers have done.

Based on bug #193629 - we haven't had a distfile for 0.65_rc1 for 10 months!

To sum up:
-No maintainer
-Open bugs (wrt compilation)
-Broken for 10+ months
-Latest "branch" is 0.81
-No easy way to get a src package/tarball which means that this package is alot of work.
-No one appears to really care about it.

Looks like this project moved into the ERISI project at http://www.eresi-project.org/ but it seems their idea of release management is to tag SVN and let you use that. Agreed that this will be difficult to manage without a proper maintainer.

+1 from me to remove the current versions.

# Masked for removal in 60 days. No distfile on the mirrors for the latest
# version, open bugs (bug #177222, #193629, #202548). Please comment on the
# removal bug #232141 if you want this one to stay. No maintainer and no easy
# way to get releases from upstream.

I use this tool. Often.

It seems like Gentoo is less and less useful these days because people are intent on finding packages to rip out of Portage. This distro used to be awesome because it had obscure packages that nobody else had.

Just because a package doesn't have lots of vocal users posting to the forums and to bugzilla doesn't mean that nobody cares about it. This still works. Leave it marked as unstable and move on, eh?

I'm not trying to argue either way, but it seems that if your browse on the site to a specific branch there is a link to download in other formats (ZIP) at the bottom of the page, linking for instance, to http://www.eresi-project.org/changeset/1110/branches/eresi-0.81-a8-1?old_path=%2F&format=zip which downloads that branch.

or rather, browse here: http://www.eresi-project.org/browser/branches/eresi-0.81-a8-1/elfsh and click the link at the bottom to: http://www.eresi-project.org/changeset/1110/branches/eresi-0.81-a8-1/elfsh?old_path=%2F&format=zip which downloads a zip archive by this name: branches_eresi-0.81-a8-1_elfsh-r1110.zip

Man-power.

People complain about broken packages and people complain about us removing them. Not much we can do, besides there is no way for anyone to get the 0.65_rc1 version atm. I will look into the later posts by Lord Drantin. You can speed up the process by modifying the ebuild and testing with the zips as he suggested.

Also note that if we (treecleaners) didn't mask this one, who knows how much longer it would have sat in the tree without being useful. A broken, unusable ebuild in the tree is a dis-service to all Gentoo users. IMO, treecleaners provide a valuable service and we have to depend on support from users like you.

I suggest till ERISI comes to portage tree, elfsh should stay. I use it.
Comment 9 Jeremy Olexa (darkside) (RETIRED) archtester gentoo-dev Security 2008-10-14 02:53:48 UTC
Based on your input, I have uploaded the .zip of 65_rc1 to the mirrors and fixed the ebuild to reflect that. I do not wish to spend more time on this package. Please file new bugs if there are any issues.

Removed the p.mask and will defer the removal until later. thanks for your comments guys.

Please see eresi (including elfsh) in bug 253436
Comment 11 Anthony Basile gentoo-dev 2011-04-16 17:07:14 UTC
I've added myself as a maintainer to elfsh. I know its problematic, but I like what it does and do use it.

If it turns out to be too badly broken, or is substituted by a better package like eresi, then I'll report here and maybe we should reopen and consider removing it.
