that is because you never created the pak0.pk3 symlink or copied said file to your baseq3 dir/
I'm only using it to play the mods, like Urban Terror. On other platforms, the retail copy of the game isn't required to just play the mods. Is there some reason why we can't play the mods standalone on Gentoo?

quake3 is no longer in portage, but if you ever manage to figure this one out, i'd like to hear it :) i basically was able to get just as far as you and no further :/
