When trying to start ANY guest os ( windows xp 32 bit, debian 64 bit, a clean new image ) vmware hard freezes my machine ( caps/scroll lock leds, mmouse, nothing ) responds . I am running gentoo amd64. I googled and found reports of this on the gentoo, ubuntu, and vmware forums but no resolution was found. There is no logs of any activity between starting and the crash in vmware-serverd.log, Xorg.0.log or messsage/syslog. I have a system that hard locks the second a guest is started too. The system runs vmware-server-1.0.6.91891 on a 2.6.24-gentoo-r8 x86_64 kernel. I went back and looked at the VMware Server doc(1) on the Gentoo Linux Wiki and realized I might of compiled my kernel with KVM support. I checked my kernel config and sure enough I did. After recompiling my kernel without KVM support and rebooting, my system quit hard locking when powering on a guest. In the words of Homer, "Doh!" I would suggest the other reporting individuals check to see if they compiled their kernels with KVM support and if so mark this as a dup of bug #223833. (1) http://www.gentoo-wiki.com/VMware_Server
