Hi. pTeX is a Japanise TeX distribution based on teTeX. It handles Japanese text easily and fonts correctly. Unlike CJK-LaTeX (in CTAN) it replaces binaries of original teTeX distribution while CJK-LaTeX is only a macro package that you can just add to live teTeX distribution. It will be installed without xdvik and dvipdfm so that one can install xdvik or dvipdfm which support CJK encodings. I posted dvipdfmx (bug #23126) and will submit xdvik next. I suggest app-text/ptex (or perhaps dev-tex?). regards, Mamoru KOMACHI aka usata

Just FYI, the difference between pTeX and CJK-LaTeX is described breifly in http://www.suse.de/~mfabian/suse-cjk/cjk-latex.html
I tested the ebuild on alpha, ppc and sparc, so please replace KEYWORDS="~x86" with KEYWORDS="~x86 ~alpha ~ppc ~sparc".
It's in CVS.
