New Zealand does not currently have an official rsync mirror, the closest mirror is Swinburne in Australia. Unfortunately with NZ internet being very poor quality with overseas links, this presents an issue - downloading from Australia results about half the speed as national NZ traffic reaches. I have set up an rsync mirror for NZ, accessible from the following address: rsync://linux.gamers.net.nz/gentoo-portage This has been setup according to the community rsync mirror instructions, and it updates twice an hour, beginning at 7 minutes and 37 minutes past the hour. It is currently syncing to the standard US mirror given on the instruction page. Gamers.net.nz (the mirror hosts) are a small business operating game servers within NZ. The server the rsync mirror is on has 2TB of disk space, is hosted in a major ISP's data centre and has unlimited bandwidth within NZ - creating an ideal repository for NZ gentoo users. If possible, we would like this server to be added as an official rsync mirror. Reproducible: Always Actual Results: NA Expected Results: NA
Hey Kat, I'm adding the mirror to our test system and will update the status on this bug. If everything is okay, we'll add you into rotation after the 23rd. In the meantime, could you please give us some hardware specs? Also, how many concurrent users will you be able to support? Thanks!
All good. linux.gamers.net.nz is in sync, current delta : 26.85 mins Timestamp on Mirror : Sun, 13 Jul 2008 02:45:04 +0000 Current time in UTC : Sun, 13 Jul 2008 03:11:55 +0000 One more check and I'll add you folks in.
I'm still waiting on the specs though. Please update the same.
Sorry for the delay. Specs are: Athlon X2 64-bit 4800+ Processor 2GB RAM 2TB raided disk space OS is CentOS 5, minimal install - 2.6.18-53.1.21.el5 #1 SMP Tue May 20 09:35:07 EDT 2008 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux Internet connection: 100Mb National It's in a datacentre at an ISP, national traffic is as fast as the box will go. International upload is limited, probably about 2Mb total split between users outside of NZ downloading from the box. So this box will be very good for the users in NZ, but not so useful for people outside of NZ (who probably would be better off using a closer mirror anyway). Not sure how many concurrent users it will support - I guess you mean downloading from rsync at the same time?
Yeah, that's what I meant. Looks good though, adding you in. Thanks for helping out Gentoo. I have added the IP you specified in the bug to our access database, please start syncing to rsync1.us.gentoo.org per our Rsync document at http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/rsync.xml. We would like you to subscribe to the gentoo-mirrors Mailing List by sending an email to gentoo-mirrors+subscribe@lists.gentoo.org, as we send our notifications of updates, releases, and changes in policy to the mirrors. Once again, thanks for the hardware and bandwidth! Please also monitor http://mirrorstats.gentoo.org/rsync as this application is used to keep track of the up-to-date nature of our mirrors For Infrastructure, Shyam Mani You are mirror rsync1.nz.gentoo.org in the rsync.nz.gentoo.org
Now syncing to rsync1. Cheers!
(In reply to comment #6) > Now syncing to rsync1. > > Cheers! > This server has stopped replying to rsync requests for a while now. I thought it would be some kind of outage but after a month of sitting and waiting I'm wondering whether or not the server was actually taken down... Before, it didn't even reply to a ping. Now it is, but not loading the site or replying to rsync requests. Does anyone know what happened? I really liked that server because it was in the same datacenter as my ISP so I get speeds that you can't even dream of. rsync1.nz.gentoo.org aka linux.gamers.net.nz needs to come back online - This bug should now be classed as reopened.
