Description ~S 2008-07-06 11:49:39 UTC
emerge -uavDN world spits following when I try to upgrade world which includes both firefox and vlc
!!! Multiple versions within a single package slot have been pulled
!!! into the dependency graph, resulting in a slot conflict:

www-client/mozilla-firefox:0

  ('ebuild', '/', 'www-client/mozilla-firefox-2.0.0.15', 'merge') pulled in by
    @world
    ('ebuild', '/', 'media-video/vlc-0.9.0_beta1', 'merge')

  ('installed', '/', 'www-client/mozilla-firefox-3.0-r1', 'nomerge') pulled in by
    @world

thats because I have USE="nsplugin"
so vlc pulls firefox 2
while I firefox ebuild wants to install firefox 3
USE="-nsplugin" will upgrade the vlc, but you don't get nsplugin for firefox then
vlc devolopers please fix this in the ebuild and pull firefox 3 instead of firefox 2

portage upgrades firefox to firefox 3 (and I am quite happy with it)
so its not possible for
USE="nsplugin" emerge -av vlc mozilla-firefox
to install anything

here's emerge --info

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.USE="nsplugin" emerge -av vlc firefox

Actual Results:
babylon ~ # USE="nsplugin" emerge -av vlc mozilla-firefox

It may be possible to solve this problem by using package.mask to
prevent one of those packages from being selected. However, it is also
possible that conflicting dependencies exist such that they are
impossible to satisfy simultaneously. If such a conflict exists in the
dependencies of two different packages, then those packages can not be
installed simultaneously.

For more information, see MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge man page
or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

Expected Results:
vlc ebuild should pull firefox 3 instead of firefox 2.0.0.15 and build nsplugin for firefox 3

just a small change in ebuild should fix this
for those who want to upgrade USE="-nsplugin" for vlc (add to /etc/portage/package.use)

OK, this is invalid.
For the plugin on firefox 3, both nsplugin and xulrunner flags should be set.
Comment 2 ~S 2008-07-06 19:10:30 UTC
kindly explain what do you mean by "OK, this is invalid"
there is no "nsplugin" flag for firefox
yes, there is "xulrunner" and it is on
if you look carefully at the emerge -av vlc firefox output you will realise the problematic flag settings
and the problem lies in vlc, IMHO
vlc should simply ask for firefox3 and link the vlc plugin to firefox 3
and thats what I have been asking
an updated ebuild for vlc, which will pull firefox 3 and not firefox 2

~S
Comment 3 Rafał Mużyło 2008-07-06 19:16:04 UTC
Those are the flags for vlc and both have to be set
for vlc to depend on xulrunner (and as it depends on >=net-libs/xulrunner-1.8,
that means it will use latest (1.9), so it will depend on firefox 3).

So, as I already said, invalid.
Comment 4 ~S 2008-07-06 19:23:16 UTC
ohhh you are right
ma bad then
how do I close this
ohhk got it,.. making this bug invalid
thanks  Rafał Mużyło
