Description Joseph Mulloy 2008-06-28 16:13:24 UTC
I have added "www-client/mozilla-firefox ~x86" to a file in /etc/portage/package.keywords to unmask firefox. When I run emerge -vauDt world this is what I get

emerge -vauDt world

These are the packages that would be merged, in reverse order:

It works correctly if I remove the -D flag

Would you like to merge these packages? [Yes/No]

Reproducible: Sometimes

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Add www-client/mozilla-firefox ~x86"www-client/mozilla-firefox ~x86" to /etc/portage/package.keywords
2. emerge mozilla-firefox
3. emerge -vauD world

Actual Results:
Portage tries to downgrade Firefox

Expected Results:
Portage should try to upgrade Firefox if a newer version is available.

Comment 1 Carsten Lohrke (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-06-28 16:19:38 UTC
See, you're mixing a testing firefox with an otherwise stable tree. There are lots of packages requiring FF 2 (or xulrunner). Not a bug.
Comment 2 Joseph Mulloy 2008-06-28 16:50:17 UTC
Turns out VLC has a dependency on Firefox 2. Is this necessary?
Comment 3 Joseph Mulloy 2008-07-04 05:17:03 UTC
Sorry to reopen the bug. I found that the problem is a hard coded dependency on Firefox 2 in the VLC ebuild. I removed VLC and the problem went away. Is the dependency necessary? I couldn't find a dependency list on the VLC website.
Comment 4 Carsten Lohrke (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-07-04 13:23:26 UTC
Yes it is necessary.
Comment 5 Don 2008-07-27 20:50:54 UTC
Many Gentoo users would recommend you add USE="xulrunner". However, in this case and in many others(OO.o), it doesn't work. I have found a workaround, so that you can keep FF3. Remove the firefox use flag, and add USE="seamonkey", this will make packages that depend on firefox, depend on seamonkey instead. Just run emerge seamonkey beforehand.
