kde-base/kdm-3.5.9 fails to start using sys-apps/openrc-0.2.5

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge baselayout2 and openrc
2. emerge kdm
3. make sure xdm is in default runlevel
Comment 1 Carsten Lohrke (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-06-25 22:51:55 UTC
With this wealth of information you're providing, it's of course quite easy to track down the issue...

@kde team: Anyone running baselayout-2/openrc, yet?

Do I sense a bit of sarcasm? He he. :-)

Comment 3 Matthew Schultz 2008-06-26 03:43:52 UTC
Whoops, wrong computer (previous emerge info). I'm doing some more debugging. /etc/init.d/xdm using kdm on amd64 computer starts properly but the x86 one doesn't. It doesn't look like it's specific to kdm. I've specified either kdm-3.5 or xdm in the DISPLAYMANAGER variable in /etc/conf.d/xdm and they're both not starting. When using kdm, I'm getting the error below in /var/log/messages. If I log in through the shell prompt and start kde with startx, it starts KDE properly.

/var/log/messages:

Jun 25 22:25:52 aragorn kdm: :0[27961]: IO Error in XOpenDisplay
Jun 25 22:25:52 aragorn kdm[27958]: X server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly

Jun 25 22:25:52 aragorn kdm[27958]: Unable to fire up local display :0; disabling.

Comment 4 Matthew Schultz 2008-06-26 03:52:37 UTC
So why am I blaming openrc and baselayout-2? /etc/init.d/xdm started kdm fine using baselayout-1 (latest stable) and then I upgraded to use baselayout-2/openrc and /etc/init.d/xdm broke. Also for kicks, I reemerged xinit, kdm and nvidia-drivers but that doesn't fix the problem.

emerge -pv xinit:

[ebuild   R   ] x11-apps/xinit-1.0.5-r1  USE="hal pam -debug -minimal" 0 kB

emerge -pv kdm:

[ebuild   R   ] kde-base/kdm-3.5.9  USE="pam -arts -debug -kdeenablefinal -kdehiddenvisibility -xinerama" 0 kB

emerge -pv nvidia-drivers:

[ebuild   R   ] x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-173.14.05  USE="acpi gtk -custom-cflags (-multilib)" 0 kB
Comment 5 Matthew Schultz 2008-06-26 03:56:16 UTC
/etc/conf.d/xdm:

# We always try and start X on a static VT. The various DMs normally default
# to using VT7. If you wish to use the xdm init script, then you should ensure
# that the VT checked is the same VT your DM wants to use. We do this check to
# ensure that you have't accidently configured something to run on the VT
# in your /etc/inittab file so that you don't get a dead keyboard.
CHECKVT=7

# What display manager do you use ?  [ xdm | gdm | kdm | kdm-3.5 | kdm-4.0 | entrance ]
# NOTE: If this is set in /etc/rc.conf, that setting will override this one.
# KDE-specific note: kdm-3.5 and kdm-4.0 are just examples. You will find all
# possible versions by looking at the directories in /usr/kde/.
DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm-3.5"
Comment 6 Matthew Schultz 2008-06-26 04:00:46 UTC
Ok, I didn't notice this but there are two more lines (acpid) in /var/log/messages that are appended everytime I start xdm before the kdm errors:

Jun 25 22:57:53 aragorn acpid: client connected from 6121[0:0]
Jun 25 22:57:53 aragorn acpid: 1 client rule loaded
Jun 25 22:57:55 aragorn kdm: :0[6122]: IO Error in XOpenDisplay
Jun 25 22:57:55 aragorn kdm[6119]: X server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly
Jun 25 22:57:55 aragorn kdm[6119]: Display :0 cannot be opened

Comment 7 Timo Gurr (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-06-26 11:48:14 UTC
Works well here on both amd64 and x86 with baselayout/openrc.

/etc/conf.d/xdm:
DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm"

Please also be sure to upgrade xinit to xinit-1.0.8-r3, edit /etc/env.d/90xsession, do an env-update and relog like the openrc migration guide mentions at the bottom in the "XSESSION" section.

Xorg.0.log for kdm and for startx

I updated to xinit-1.0.8-r3 and I also updated the 90xsession XESSION variable to kde-3.5 and I have /etc/conf.d/xdm DISPLAYMANAGER set to "kdm" and ran env-update. /etc/init.d/xdm start still does not start kdm while startx will start kde. The kdm log I'm attaching is the one that's failing and the startx one is the successful one. Any ideas?

Could you please also attach your /etc/X11/xorg.conf?
Comment 10 Robin Johnson archtester Gentoo Infrastructure gentoo-dev Security 2008-07-03 08:05:40 UTC
As the bugzilla admin, I'd like to apologize for a muckup I was responsible for, that caused the loss of your attachment.

The filename was xorg.conf.tar.bz2.

Here's your original comment:
xorg.conf backup is before and xorg.conf is now
Apparently my xorg.conf file was screwed up which was strange since I didn\'t have any problems with it before with kdm. Anyway, I ran nvidia-xconfig and it adjusted the file to xorg.conf and backed up what I had in xorg.conf.backup. The only thing I notice different is that it moved options like Option \"RenderAccel\" \"true\" to the Screen instead of the Device. I always thought that these things were supposed to be set in the Device area. Apparently, that made all the difference, kdm then fired up properly when I ran it manually and rebooted and initiated through rc xdm. I guess kdm is significantly more finicky with incorrectly configured xorg.conf files than startx.
Comment 11 Timo Gurr (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-07-03 11:39:44 UTC
Glad that you got it working again. Closing as invalid since no issue with kdm & openrc then.

@Robbat
Not a big problem here, thanks for your bugzilla work!
Comment 12 Martin Samek 2008-09-29 18:41:21 UTC
I have to reopen this bug, because I have same issue.

I installed baselayout2 and openrc since that I am unable to start kdm with '/etc/init.d/xdm start'. kdm from shell starts instantly. Xorg configuration is correct and XSESSION in 90xsession is set to kde-3.5.
