Disable nls/iconv in uClibc.
(In reply to comment #1) > Disable nls/iconv in uClibc. Solar: if using stage3-x86-uclibc-2008.0.tar.bz2 the (experimental) profile for x86 uclibc automatically masks the iconv / nls use options... What do you suggest if using instead of a libc build with native iconv since some packages explictly rely on iconv to function properly?
Those pkgs should be fixed to allow the to be non-iconv aware. iconv/nls are just bloat anyway in the embedded world.
(In reply to comment #3) > Those pkgs should be fixed to allow the to be non-iconv aware. iconv/nls are > just > bloat anyway in the embedded world. uclibc is not used solely for embedded; it was never intended to be an purely for "extreme bloat reduction" applications requiring a libc. Though incomplete according to uclibc.org, locale support in uclibc is not "just bloat" and can surely be debugged and made useful for applications requiring more than just "extreme footprint reduction". --- For instance: virtualization / process isolation, jails, shared hosting and the like; just as embedded can greatly benifit from footprint reduction, so can other uses of uclibc. --- I speak with personal interest as the gentoo-virtualization project will soon be "kicking off" and I intend to participate. Hopefully my work can continue (with community support) at developing an apropriate overlay for portage that allows uclibc to correctly compile with iconv support. --- ... k'thx... no objection on my part for a "bloat reduction" option remaining available for uclibc ebuilds. =^_^=
(In reply to comment #4) > (In reply to comment #3) ... If you are dealing with overlays then you might want to slap/hack together mini-iconv support for those pkgs. http://tinderbox.dev.gentoo.org/portage/local/misc/mini-iconv/ I don't have time to explain it so I'll just point you to how I've used it in the past. http://tinderbox.dev.gentoo.org/portage/local/misc/glib/ good-luck.
