Description Alexander Werner 2008-06-17 17:53:13 UTC
When I try to use the splash_manager to run a demonstration of any theme, I get the error:
Error: Splash daemon not running!
And I find this in dmesg:
fbsplashd.stati[8472]: segfault at ff595955 eip 0813f257 esp bfdb4508 error 4
Steps to reproduce:
1. Emerge splashutils-1.5.4.1, splash-themes-gentoo, baselayout-2.0.0 and openrc-0.2.5
2. Create the initramfs, reboot
3. fbsplash and fbcondecor are working correctly
4. splash_manager -c demo -t gentoo -m s --steps=100

This is only annoying because i wanted to build my own theme, and testing the silent splash is quite difficult now.

Does `splash_manager -c demo -t gentoo` work?

If not, could you please try to boot with splash=<options>,profile and then run `splash_manager -c replay -t gentoo` to see whether that works?
Comment 2 Alexander Werner 2008-07-21 11:51:23 UTC
FYI: Due to a hardware error, my Gentoo is runs now in a VMWare, using the amd64 arch. I originally found this bug while running a VIA EPIA-10000G, but am now experiencing the same results.

Nope, same Error, dmesg:
fbsplashd.stati[3044]: segfault at fffff4eefffff4e6 ip 4ea645 sp 7fff2a16dd40 error 4 in fbsplashctl[400000+19f000]

Works, I attached my /lib64/splash/cache/profile

The problem should be fixed in splashutils-1.5.4.2. Thanks for reporting it! :)

I still see this issue on amd64 with 1.5.4.2 and 1.5.4.3.

Could you please post your `emerge --info` and `fbset -i` output?

I don't seem to be able to replicate this problem. Are you sure you are using an unmodified 'gentoo' theme from splash-themes-gentoo? Also, does fbsplashd only segfault when run by splash_manager? (does it work during boot? does it work with splash_manager -c replay?). Does it segfault if you run -c demo with other themes (emergence, livecd-2007.0)?

No, I am using an unmodified livecd-2007.0 theme from splash-themes-livecd.

I don't think so, the splash is painted, but no progress, no icons, sits at 0%, doesn't respond to F2, etc., and no vt switch occurs.

> does it work with splash_manager -c replay?).

Huh, I went to try, rebooted with SPLASH_PROFILE="yes" in /etc/conf.d/splash, and now it works correctly, progress, icons, etc. But now that it's up my /lib/splash/cache/profile is still empty. And commenting out SPLASH_PROFILE, doesn't break it again, it's still working...maybe something gets written or created only when SPLASH_PROFILE is defined that is needed?

> livecd-2007.0)?

Can't test now that it's working :) Let me know if you want me to break it again somehow for further troubleshooting.

Perhaps.. Do you get a valid (i.e. non-empty) profile file when you add 'profile' to your 'splash=' setting on the kernel command line instead of setting SPLASH_PROFILE to 'yes' in /etc/conf.d/splash?

Well, if you can figure out a way to break it again, it would probably help me fix a bug in splashutils :) So, if you can break it again, we'll try to figure out what the problem is, and otherwise we can just close this bug as WORKSFORME, unless someone can come up with a way to reproduce the problem.

Same problem here on amd64!
silent splash bar doesn't move, VT doesn't change, the F Key isn't working and if I try a theme in silentmode I have the segfault.
