Description Daniel Böhmer 2008-06-17 15:56:14 UTC
I have a laptop ThinkPad T61 with an USB mouse connected.Sometimes the mouse the driver locks up in the way that any mouse movement or other event (clicking) sets the mouse pointer to the top left corner. This happens happens either with the external USB mouse and the internal Track Point together (both at once) or the internal Touch Pad is affected. Very rarely it even happens that both events occur one after another -- then no system control via mouse is possible anymore.

Why do I think it is a X.org problem, not a driver problem:
This can happen to both the usb mouse (controlled by mouse driver) and the Touch Pad (by synaptics driver). To me it seems reasonable that this must be a bug in X.org or something related to it.

More details about the phenomenon:
* removing the USB mouse and plugging it in again does NOT help
* restarting X.org does help
* after suspend to RAM the probability of this error happening doubles
* when working with VirtualBox this problem occurs much more often and much quicker
* when working with VirtualBox and CamStudio inside WinXP guest (CamStudio is a program for recording the screen in order to create video tutorials for software) this happens by chance of approx. 100% and really quick (<5min)

(CamStudio sets the mouse cursor invisible inside WinXP in order to take a screenshot and sets it visible *after every single frame* -- this makes the icon flickering while recording a clip. I think this could lead to some overload in the mouse driver whatever. I have no knowledge about X.org internals but think this could be helpful...)

Graphics in my laptop:
* Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 (i810)

For other specs see http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:T61

Software I use:
* x11-base/xorg-server-1.3.0.0-r6
* x11-base/xorg-x11-7.2
* media-libs/mesa-7.0.3
* x11-drivers/xf86-video-i810
* kernel: 2.6.24-tuxonice-r4 32-bit/SMP

X.org drivers:
* intel (-> i810)
* keyboard
* mouse
* synaptics

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. start X
2. work with your system; especially VirtualBox
3. move mouse or click a mouse button -> mouse cursor moves to top left corner

Actual Results:
mouse cursor is locked to the corner and not quite usable

Expected Results:
work with the mouse as used to

I see the very same probem on hardened X86, especially when working with OpenGL and using the touchpad.

However, this bug shows up not only in OpenGL applications, but sometimes with konqueror too, and seems to have to do with clicking -- hitting the window center?

Killing the X-server by <alt-bs> helps, but has often to be done two times in sequence, in order to restore normal mouse functions. Swiching to a console window by ALT-F1 shows that gpm is working normally. Switching back to X does not restore the mouse function. There are no error messages in Xorg.0.log, kdm.log, dmesg, messages.

No news for a year, I'll assume newer versions of xorg-server and input drivers don't have such issues.

If you can still reproduce the issue, please don't hesitate to reopen this bug.

Thanks
