tetex currently blocks latex-beamer because tetex already contains the beamer classes. However, the tetex distribution only carries 3.01 (released in 2003, the latest is 3.07 in 2007). It would probably make it easier to do future updates if the beamer files were to be removed from the default tetex texmf. Of course, the other alternative is to bump the default beamer classes up to 3.07. The current state of things makes one (at least me) want to install the new files manually into texmf which might cause a couple of surprises... Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. emerge tetex 2. emerge latex-beamer Actual Results: Calculating dependencies... done! [ebuild N ] dev-tex/pgf-1.18 USE="-doc" [ebuild N ] dev-tex/latex-beamer-3.07 USE="-doc -examples -lyx" [blocks B ] dev-tex/latex-beamer (is blocking app-text/tetex-3.0_p1-r3) [blocks B ] dev-tex/pgf (is blocking app-text/tetex-3.0_p1-r3) Expected Results: Version upgrade.
AFAIK you should be switching to app-text/texlive. app-text/tetex is deprecated.
