My printer refuses to print,and the only error at the kde prointing dialog was foomatic-rip failed After long research, and compiling of cups ghostscript-gpl, foomatic, I've found the reason: I have to remove the line in the hplip ebuild: --disable-foomatic-rip-hplip-install \ so my printer started to work - when this line is really necreasy then maybe we add a hp use flag ? Reproducible: Always
Sorry for the delay. Please remove your printer queue, restart cupsd, and reinstall your printer using hp-setup. If it still doesn't work then run the following commands from root and attach the result: > emerge -vp hplip foomatic-filters > hp-check Denis.
I have the exact same problem as the reporter and I can install the printer with the workaround that was mentioned. Also, I'm no able to use hp-setup to install my printer because it is a network printer and hp-setup insists in trying to find an USB printer, even when I pass it the printer's IP address. # emerge -vp hplip foomatic-filters These are the packages that would be merged, in order: Calculating dependencies ... done! [ebuild R ] net-print/foomatic-filters-3.0.20080507 USE="cups" 167 kB [ebuild R ] net-print/hplip-2.8.6b USE="dbus ppds qt4 -cupsddk -doc -fax -minimal -parport -qt3 -scanner -snmp" 10,699 kB Total: 2 packages (2 reinstalls), Size of downloads: 10,866 kB

Denis.
Workaround: There is no need to call emerge ghostscript-gpl again. You need just a symbolic link from /usr/libexec/cups to /usr/lib/cups, because some printer driver search the foormatic-rip application there. ln -s /usr/libexec/cups /usr/lib/cups After that you can print without further changes! After a emerge hplip with a newer version as 2.8.6b the problem is also fixed. emerge --info Portage 2.1.6.11 (default/linux/x86/2008.0, gcc-4.1.2, glibc-2.8_p20080602-r1, 2.6.29-gentoo-r5 i686) ================================================================= System uname: Linux-2.6.29-gentoo-r5-i686-with-glibc2.0 Timestamp of tree: Thu, 30 Apr 2009 01:45:01 +0000 ccache version 2.4 [disabled] app-shells/bash: 3.2_p39 dev-lang/python: 2.5.4-r2 dev-util/ccache: 2.4-r7 sys-apps/baselayout: 1.12.11.1 sys-apps/sandbox: 1.6-r2 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.63 sys-devel/automake: 1.5, 1.9.6-r2, 1.10.2 sys-devel/binutils: 2.18-r3 sys-devel/gcc-config: 1.4.0-r4 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.26 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.27-r2 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86" CBUILD="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-O2 -march=pentium-m -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/ca-certificates.conf /etc/env.d /etc/fonts/fonts.conf /etc/gconf /etc/revdep-rebuild /etc/sandbox.d /etc/splash /etc/terminfo /etc/udev/rules.d" CXXFLAGS="-O2 -march=pentium-m -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="buildpkg distlocks fixpackages parallel-fetch protect-owned sandbox sfperms strict unmerge-orphans userfetch" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://mirror.cambrium.nl/pub/os/linux/gentoo/ http://gentoo.mneisen.org/ http://de-mirror.org/distro/gentoo/" LDFLAGS="-Wl,-O1" LINGUAS="en" MAKEOPTS="-j1" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_CONFIGROOT="/" PORTAGE_RSYNC_OPTS="--recursive --links --safe-links --perms --times --compress --force --whole-file --delete --stats --timeout=180 --exclude=/distfiles --exclude=/local --exclude=/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="X cups cupsddk dbus dri iconv mmx nptl ppds sse x86" ALSA_CARDS="ali5451 als4000 atiixp atiixp-modem bt87x ca0106 cmipci emu10k1 emu10k1x ens1370 ens1371 es1938 es1968 fm801 hda-intel intel8x0 intel8x0m maestro3 trident usb-audio via82xx via82xx-modem ymfpci" ALSA_PCM_PLUGINS="adpcm alaw asym copy dmix dshare dsnoop empty extplug file hooks iec958 ioplug ladspa lfloat linear meter mmap_emul mulaw multi null plug rate route share shm softvol" APACHE2_MODULES="actions alias auth_basic authn_alias authn_anon authn_dbm authn_default authn_file authz_dbm authz_default authz_groupfile authz_host authz_owner authz_user autoindex cache dav dav_fs dav_lock deflate dir disk_cache env expires ext_filter file_cache filter headers include info log_config logio mem_cache mime mime_magic negotiation rewrite setenvif speling status unique_id userdir usertrack vhost_alias" ELIBC="glibc" INPUT_DEVICES="keyboard mouse" KERNEL="linux" LCD_DEVICES="bayrad cfontz cfontz633 glk hd44780 lb216 lcdm001 mtxorb ncurses text" LINGUAS="en" USERLAND="GNU" VIDEO_CARDS="intel i810" Unset: CPPFLAGS, CTARGET, EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS, FFLAGS, INSTALL_MASK, LANG, LC_ALL, PORTAGE_COMPRESS, PORTAGE_COMPRESS_FLAGS, PORTAGE_RSYNC_EXTRA_OPTS, PORTDIR_OVERLAY
