Description Dirk-Lüder Kreie 2008-06-09 18:06:30 UTC
tangoGPS is a lightweight and fast mapping application. It runs on handheld devices like the Openmoko Neo1973 as well as on the eeePC and the Linux desktop. By default is uses map data from the OpenStreetMap.org project and other repositories can be easily added.

Maps are automagically downloaded and cached for offline use while you drag or zoom the map. Additionally you can conveniently pre-cache areas.

I don't think the gpsd should be a hard dep. I'd like to use it on my laptop without gps.
Comment 4 Nicolas Dufresne 2008-09-26 23:04:04 UTC
I also agree that is should not depend on gpsd. It's a bit like if Firefox was dependent on Apache. You don't need the server to run the client.

BTW ... 0.9.0.3 is very, very old version now. 0.9.3 was released

app-misc/tangogps-0.9.3

I used the 0.9.0.3 ebuid and bumped it to 0.9.3. Fixed a couple of issues on the way. The gpsd dependecy is still strict, as the program does not make any sense without it (at least I could not find anything to put it into GPS emulation or similar).

+1

I've removed the gpsd dependency in my local overlay, as I use tangogps to test my tileserver locally on a computer which does not have any GPS connected - I can just drag the map by mouse, I do not need to get the position from GPS

and even on Neo FreeRunner, which has GPS, I do not turn it on and run gpsd just to have a quick peek into map using tangogps (ehm, however, not runnig Gentoo on the FreeRunner yet ;-))

from the tangogps homepage:
tangogps is an easy to use, fast and lightweight mapping application for use with or without GPS.

how about making the gpsd dependency dependant upon the global 'gps' USE flag?
like so:
-               >=sci-geosciences/gpsd-2.34"
+               gps? ( >=sci-geosciences/gpsd-2.34 )"

also - the app-misc category was proposed (and thats where i put it in my overlay) - but wouldnt the sci-geosciences category be a better fit?

also - the 0.9.3 ebuild also works for 0.9.5 (just rename). great work! thanks.
i plan on adding this to the portage tree - any objections?
