The gamma local USE flag (used in xfree-drm) is described incorrectly.

Current:$ grep gamma /usr/portage/profiles/use.local.desc 
x11-base/xfree-drm:gamma - If you have a matrox video card

Correct:If you have a 3dlabs video card
USE="matrox" is for Matrox cards, USE="gamma" is for 3dlabs cards.
