When I try to build avahi I get:

IIRC mono doesn't work correctly with a PAX enabled kernel.

Could you try remerging avahi after setting paxctl -m /usr/bin/mono

Bingo, you aced it.  Could something like this alleviate the qt, PyQt, and mplayer compilation problems I've had for quite a while now?  The problem is said to be hardened-related.
