The symlink /usr/lib/libGL.so.1.2 is NOT created by issuing `eselect opengl set ati'. As a result the library cannot be loaded: "glxinfo: error while loading shared libraries: libGL.so.1.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory". After the link is manually created by issuing `ln -s /usr/lib/opengl/ati/lib/libGL.so.1.2 /usr/lib/libGL.so.1.2' everything works as expected.

I had this problem too. 

A work around that worked for me is to emerge x11-apps/mesa-progs again. This is probably safer than linking into the proprietary driver's files. 

I fiddled with stuff a lot before I realized that ligGL.so.1.2 was missing. I am not sure what caused ligGL.so.1.2 to go away. I emerged and --unmerge'd several versions of x11-drivers/ati-drivers-8.522 and earlier before I noticed ligGL.so.1.2 was missing.

I had the same issue. 

Sorry for my stupid question but isn't the 
joe@moon> eselect opengl set ati
makes the libGL.so.1.2 link in /usr/lib/?

Should be fixed in 9.6 version of the drivers (more of in eselect-opengl-1.0.7).

Would you please confirm?

This one is fixed in 9.6 and 9.7
