Description kevin.riddl 2008-05-27 12:52:26 UTC
The system completely freezes when I try to start VMs that worked fine a few months ago when I used them last. In the mean time I have upgraded vmware-server and vmware-server-console to 1.0.5 and kernel from 2.6.23 to 2.6.24. The virtual machine tested is Windows XP Professional.
See http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-661115.html for similar situations.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Start vmware-server modules.
2. Launch vmware-server-console.
3. Power on a VM.

Actual Results:
Complete freeze.

VMWare Server Console UI log

Attaching what gets written to the UI log of VMWare Server Console before the freeze.

I tried to start the gentoo-2008.0-beta2 LiveCD ISO, which also worked fine before upgrading. The system still froze.

Well it turns out I had enabled KVM in the kernel. Recompiling the kernel without KVM fixed it.
