emerge libevent-1.4.3 doesn't work if both distcc and userpriv are used in FEATURES. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.enable distcc and userpriv in FEATURES 2.emerge =libevent-1.4.3 Actual Results: The build fails with distcc locking errors. You can find a cpu_localhost_0 file (most certainly depends on the content of /etc/distcc/hosts but should be the most common result) belonging to root in /var/tmp/portage/.distcc/lock ($DISTCC_DIR/lock) -rw-r--r-- 1 root portage 0 May 26 12:47 cpu_localhost_0 Expected Results: Should build :-) emerge --info result : Portage 2.1.4.4 (default-linux/amd64/2006.1/desktop, gcc-4.1.2, glibc-2.6.1-r0, 2.6.22-gentoo-r2 x86_64) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.22-gentoo-r2 x86_64 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+ Timestamp of tree: Mon, 26 May 2008 08:23:01 +0000 distcc 2.18.3 x86_64-pc-linux-gnu (protocols 1 and 2) (default port 3632) [enabled] ccache version 2.4 [enabled] app-shells/bash: 3.2_p33 dev-java/java-config: 1.3.7, 2.1.6 dev-lang/python: 2.4.4-r9 dev-python/pycrypto: 2.0.1-r6 dev-util/ccache: 2.4-r7 sys-apps/baselayout: 1.12.11.1 sys-apps/sandbox: 1.2.18.1-r2 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.61-r1 sys-devel/automake: 1.5, 1.6.3, 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.9.6-r2, 1.10.1 sys-devel/binutils: 2.18-r1 sys-devel/gcc-config: 1.4.0-r4 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.26 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.23-r3 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="amd64" CBUILD="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-march=k8 -O2 -pipe" CHOST="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/kde/3.5/env /usr/kde/3.5/share/config /usr/kde/3.5/shutdown /usr/share/config" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/env.d /etc/env.d/java/ /etc/fonts/fonts.conf /etc/gconf /etc/revdep-rebuild /etc/terminfo /etc/udev/rules.d" CXXFLAGS="-march=k8 -O2 -pipe" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="ccache distcc distlocks metadata-transfer parallel-fetch sandbox sfperms strict unmerge-orphans userfetch userpriv usersandbox" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://ftp.belnet.be/mirror/rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo/ http://ftp.snt.utwente.nl/pub/os/linux/gentoo http://gentoo.mirror.solnet.ch" LINGUAS="fr en" MAKEOPTS="-j6" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_RSYNC_OPTS="--recursive --links --safe-links --perms --times --compress --force --whole-file --delete --stats --timeout=180 --exclude=/distfiles --exclude=/local --exclude=/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/local/portage/layman/jtek /usr/local/portage/layman/sajinet /usr/local/portage" SYNC="rsync://rsync.europe.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="X a52 aac aalib akode alsa amd64 asf audiofile avi bash-completion berkdb bzip2 cairo cdparanoia cdr cjk cli cracklib crypt cups dbus dga dri dts dvb dvd dvdr dvdread emacs emboss encode exif fam ffmpeg firefox flac foomaticdb gif gimpprint glibc-omitfp glut gphoto2 gstreamer gtk gtk2 hal iconv ieee1394 imagemagick imlib isdnlog java jikes jpeg kde lcms ldap libcaca libnotify lirc live lm_sensors logitech-mouse mad matroska midi mikmod mng mod mozdevelop mozsvg mp3 mp4 mpeg mtp mudflap musepack musicbrainz ncurses nls nptl nptlonly nsplugin nvidia offensive ogg oggvorbis openal openexr opengl openmp pam pcre pdf perl physfs png povray ppds pppd python quicktime rdesktop readline reflection rtc ruby samba sametime scanner sdl session shout slp sndfile speex spell spl ssl startup-notification svg theora threads tidy tiff truetype unicode usb v4l v4l2 vorbis x264 xcomposite xine xinerama xml xorg xpm xprint xrandr xscreensaver xv xvid xvmc zlib" ALSA_CARDS="ice1724" ALSA_PCM_PLUGINS="adpcm alaw asym copy dmix dshare dsnoop empty extplug file hooks iec958 ioplug ladspa lfloat linear meter mulaw multi null plug rate route share shm softvol" APACHE2_MODULES="actions alias auth_basic authn_alias authn_anon authn_dbm authn_default authn_file authz_dbm authz_default authz_groupfile authz_host authz_owner authz_user autoindex cache dav dav_fs dav_lock deflate dir disk_cache env expires ext_filter file_cache filter headers include info log_config logio mem_cache mime mime_magic negotiation rewrite setenvif speling status unique_id userdir usertrack vhost_alias" ELIBC="glibc" INPUT_DEVICES="keyboard mouse evdev" KERNEL="linux" LCD_DEVICES="bayrad cfontz cfontz633 glk hd44780 lb216 lcdm001 mtxorb ncurses text" LINGUAS="fr en" LIRC_DEVICES="imon" USERLAND="GNU" VIDEO_CARDS="nv nvidia" Unset: CPPFLAGS, CTARGET, EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS, INSTALL_MASK, LANG, LC_ALL, LDFLAGS, PORTAGE_COMPRESS, PORTAGE_COMPRESS_FLAGS, PORTAGE_RSYNC_EXTRA_OPTS
Can you please test 1.4.4 and report if that has the same failure and post the failure? Thanks.
libevent 1.4.4 builds correctly. What's more surprising is that 1.4.3 now builds correctly too. I just checked my emerge.log to be sure that I was on the same system that failed earlier and indeed I was. There were several packages upgraded to the last stable version/installed since last try though. I don't see any which should be used by the build process but here's the list anyway: net-misc/memcached-1.2.5 media-libs/akode-2.0.2 net-libs/libpcap-0.9.8-r1 app-admin/syslog-ng-2.0.9 dev-libs/libxslt-1.1.24 app-text/rarian-0.6.0-r1 dev-java/sun-jdk-1.6.0.06 app-text/scrollkeeper-9999 net-ftp/lftp-3.7.0 media-libs/sdl-net-1.2.7 x11-libs/wxGTK-2.8.7.1-r1 sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.24-r8 media-libs/libgphoto2-2.4.1 media-video/vlc-0.9.0_alpha20080524 media-gfx/gphoto2-2.4.1 media-gfx/gtkam-0.1.14 x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-169.12 app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-java-1.6.0.06 app-emulation/wine-1.0_rc2 net-fs/nfs-utils-1.1.0-r1 net-misc/nxclient-3.2.0 # ~amd64

Thanks for you prompt response and willingness to improve Gentoo! =)
