Description qriff 2008-05-25 21:22:46 UTC
Setting a /etc/resolv.conf line:

search domain.local

with a top-level domain of .local will fail DNS/IP resolving for most common utils.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Edit /etc/resolv.conf
2. Add/Modify setting to "search somedomain.local"
3. Use most common DNS resolving dependent network utils, like ping.

Actual Results:
Utility fails to resolve DNS/IP.

Expected Results:
Resolve DNS/IP normally, using a localdomain of "somedomain.local".

This also affects Sabayon.

This is obviously a (local) network configuration problem and not a bug in Gentoo Linux.
Comment 2 qriff 2008-05-26 16:53:03 UTC
This has nothing to do with the local network, you can edit the setting manually and still experience the same problem.

And how would this be a (local) network configuration problem since it is Gentoo that does not _do_ the resolving merely based on a string, at least point out the RFC/etc definition where the use of top-level domain .local is defined not to be resolved by the OS/utils as default.

Technically there is absolutely no responsibility attached to any related part to actually be make notice about this irregularity, that for this one single top-level domain string there has not been done any DNS/IP resolving.

No resolving even if the FQDN hostname to be resolved does not use the top-level .local .

Should the admin/user be left to guess/strace?

It depends on factors external to Gentoo. Also, you haven't given any information about a bug. You simply edited a line and then things turned ugly. Until you find out why Gentoo has this problem (and notably, why other operating systems do not), this isn't a bug in Gentoo.
