I think that "latex" is much more intuituve than "kpathsea", also, seems that "kpathsea" simply adds tex support (per /usr/portage/profiles/use.local.desc)

Please consider modifying this name for this USE flag

it was latex.  it was changed to kpathsea at the recommendation of the tex team.
